Field Hockey Loses In NYSCFHL Semis

November 9, 2008
Cortland, NY

The SUNY Cortland field hockey club hosted and competed in the NYSCFHL league championships this past Sunday on Stadium White. Seven teams attended the tournament including Binghamton, Cornell, Buffalo, Ithaca, LeMoyne, and Syracuse.

The first game of the day featured Cortland and LeMoyne in a hard-fought defensive battle. Cortland offense wasn’t able to convert on numerous scoring chances and the defense played well enough to force overtime with the Dolphins after a scoreless 50 minutes. With 9 seconds remaining in the 2nd half, Cortland’s Kim Vocco was able to beat the LeMoyne goaltender for the sudden-death victory.

In the second round, Cortland allowed three first half goals to eventual tournament champion Binghamton. A late goal by the Red Dragons wasn’t enough to pull even with the Bearcats and Cortland’s season came to a close with a 3-1 loss.

The field hockey club finishes an impressive fall season with a record of 5-2. Check back in the Spring for updates and information about the club as they compete in tournaments. Congratulations to the field hockey club on a successful fall season!

Cortland, NY

The Cortland field hockey club held off Geneseo 3-2 on Saturday to improve to 3-1 in the NYSCFHL and leaving them in a tie for first place in the league. Geneseo tallied the first goal midway through the first half, but Cortland’s Jenna Wenk would even things up with a beautiful goal on a breakaway with 8 minutes left. In the second half, Cortland came out firing. Christen Mastronaldi and Danielle Panero scored to extend the Cortland lead to 3-1. The score would stay that way until the last minute of the game when Geneseo scored to bring the margin back to 1. However, time would run out on the Blue Knights and Cortland would walk away with a 3-2 victory. Goaltender Kacie Scholman made several key saves in net to preserve the Red Dragon victory.

The previous weekend, Cortland dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Ithaca in overtime. Nicole Sherman scored the lone goal for the Red Dragons in the contest. The loss was Cortland’s first of the season.
