Women’s Lax Beats William Smith

April 3, 2009
Geneva, NY

On a rainy Friday night, the SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse club used goals from Whitney Stevenson, Dana Zaccaro, and Steph Spirawk and a stellar performance in net by goaltender Sam Anderson to secure an 11-7 win over William Smith on the road. Despite the inclement weather, Cortland took a 6-1 lead at halftime and held on for an 11-7 victory, pushing their ECWLA D-IV record to 4-1.

The Red Dragons currently stand in second place in their division with only Syracuse left to play on Wednesday night at the Orange. A win by Cortland would guarantee them a second place finish in their division behind Rhode Island, who handed Cortland their only loss, a 9-7 decision, on March 28. The ECWLA is comprised of 24 teams broken up into four divisions. Each division winner is guaranteed a spot in the conference playoffs with the next 4 best teams rounding out the 8-team tournament. A win over Syracuse would go a long way towards securing the Red Dragons a playoff berth in their inaugural ECWLA season.

Check back on Thursday, 4/9 for contest results and updated playoff information. Best of luck to our women’s lacrosse club!
