The SUNY Cortland women’s rugby club has earned two consecutive victories on their way to starting the season with a 2-1 record. Cortland’s lone loss came at home against Fredonia on September 19th. Cortland fell behind 5-0 early in the match, but went on to control the tempo for the remainder of the half. Cortland’s Allie Case scored less than a minute before the half making it 5-5 at the break. In the second half, Cortland played well, but couldn’t get the offense going. Fredonia scored to take a 12-5 lead and Cortland was handed their first loss of the season.

A rejuvenated Cortland squad returned to the pitch the following Saturday at LeMoyne.  Sarah Miura, Meg Inglis, and Brittany Pardi all scored tries for the Peace Frogs, and Molly Fogarty made 2 out of 3 conversion kicks as Cortland rolled to a 19-12 victory over the Dolphins.

This past Saturday, Cortland traveled to Buffalo to take on Canisius College. In their best team contest of the season, Cortland used an incredible defensive effort to shut down the Golden Griffins. Sarah Miura and freshman Beth Studt each scored two tries, Jackie Bodnar added a fifth, and Molly Fogarty converted two of five kicks to defeat Canisius 29-0 on the road. With the victory, Cortland improves to 2-1 overall and sits in 2nd place in West Division II of the New York State Rugby Conference. Cortland (11 points) is five points behind division leader Geneseo. Cortland returns to Buffalo to compete against Buffalo State before returning home for what could be a division-deciding matchup with Geneseo on the 24th.

Rochester, NY

The SUNY Cortland Peace Frogs surprised everyone but themselves, as they dominated the competition at the 2009 Collegiate Upstates Tournament this past weekend. Not only did Cortland win the NYSRC D-II championship, they did not allow a point to be scored against them. The tournament victory was the club’s second tournament championship in as many weeks, as the club won their own 2nd annual “Smash It Up” tournament on April 11th.

On the road to the championship, Cortland defeated Colgate 17-0 and Oneonta 12-0 to help them advance to the championship game. In that game, the Peace Frogs defeated Buffalo State 19-0, again shutting out their opponent for the club’s first Collegiate Upstates championship since 2003. Congratulations to the SUNY Cortland women’s rugby club on an impressive tournament championship!

April 11, 2009
Cortland, NY

The SUNY Cortland women’s rugby club went 2-0-1 in pool play and had enough left in the tank to prevail in the championship game, winning their own tournament and gaining momentum for the 2009 Collegiate Upstates next weekend. The 2nd annual “Smash It Up” tournament hosted by the club featured clubs from Colgate, Potsdam, and Central New York.

In the first contest, the Peace Frogs faced their toughest opponent, Central New York. Cortland trailed 5-0 late, but scored a try to tie the game at 5-5. The game would end in a draw that would force the two clubs to meet again in a championship rematch. In their next two games, Cortland held Potsdam and Colgate to a combined 2 points, defeating the Red Raiders 12-0 and the Bears 52-0.

In the championship game, it was all Cortland. The club scored twice and converted both 2-point kicks to take a 14 point lead late into the game. Central New York scored late to make a game of it, but missed the kick ending their chances for a comeback. Final score: Cortland 14, Central New York 5.

The Peace Frogs will now compete in the 2009 Collegiate Upstates Tournament hosted by the Rochester Colonials at Genessee Valley Park in Rochester, NY. Check back next week for tournament results and contest information! Congratulations to the women’s rugby club, 2009 “Smash It Up” tournament champions!
