SUNY Cortland Sport Clubs

Attention all female students,

The Women’s Soccer club will be holding an organizational meeting on Thursday, September 3 at 6:30pm by Poolside in Park Center. Please bring something to write with, as well as your health insurance cards or other proof of medical insurance with policy numbers, group numbers, etc. Proof of medical insurance is mandatory prior to participation with any sport club.

If you are interested, but cannot attend the meeting, please contact Jess Kristy at Jessica.Kristy@cortland.edu.

Syracuse, NY

The Women’s Soccer Club won their last game of the season 2-1 over Syracuse. It was a great way for the club to end their fall season. Cortland’s defense played strong throughout the game keeping Syracuse away from the goal. The team seemed driven to win their last game of the season. The game was tied 1-1 for most of the second half, until Megan Thayer scored of a penalty kick to win the game!

Despite poor field and weather conditions, the girls really pulled together to win their final game of the season. Cortland finishes the fall season with an overall record of 5-3-3. Check back in the Spring for updated results and schedule information!

The Cortland Women’s Soccer team played hard against Colgate, scoring 3 goals in the first half. Even though their usual goalie was out this game, excellent saves were provided by Becca Shnirel and Katie Meyer. Cortland took the lead in the first half, but after halftime Colgate came back playing stronger then before. The Cortland midfielders did a great job getting the ball back for the defenders and pushing the game forward, allowing only a few goals to get in.

Cortland plays Oswego this Sunday, October 19th, 11am, on Stadium White. Come out and support the team!

The SUNY Cortland women’s soccer club placed second to Cornell University in the Kickoff Classic, an eight team tournament hosted by Cortland. Other teams participating in the tournament were Ithaca, Colgate, Binghamton, Cornell, Buffalo, and Oswego. Cortland faced off against Oswego, Colgate, and Ithaca in pool play.

In the opening game, Cortland got on the board early and never looked back, beating Colgate 3-0. The second game matched Cortland against local rival Ithaca College. Cortland held a 1-0 lead throughout most of the game before Ithaca tied it at 1-1 late in the second half. That score would prove to be the final, as Cortland and Ithaca both pushed their records to 1-0-1 on the day. The final matchup of the afternoon for the Red Dragons was against the Lakers of Oswego. Cortland scored early and often to beat Oswego 3-0, making their record 2-0-1 in pool play. A 2-0 loss by Ithaca to Colgate let Cortland advance to the finals to meet Cornell.

In the championship, Cortland could not find the back of the net and Cornell scored a goal in each half to earn the tournament championship, 2-0. Cortland goaltender Meghan Thayer had an outstanding performance on the day, allowing only 3 goals in 5 contests.

The Red Dragons return to action this weekend with a home contest against Binghamton. Game time is scheduled for 12pm on Saturday, 9/20 on Stadium White. Come out and support the SUNY Cortland women’s soccer club! Admission is free!
