Cortland, NY

In a late fall matchup, Cortland played host to NCSA North Atlantic - North conference newcomer UConn on Sunday. The two clubs played a triple-header that could have potentially decided which team will be awarded the conference’s automatic bid to the NCSA World Series. Despite the late date, both teams played their games under sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 60’s and lower 70’s throughout the day.

In the first game, Cortland fell behind 1-0 early before tying the game 1-1 in the next inning. The score would stay unchanged until the top half of the 7th when UConn put four on the board, taking a 5-1 lead and earning them a victory in game 1. Cortland’s Tara Forester went 3 for 3 in the loss. The second game saw the Red Dragons rebound with excellent defense, superb pitching, and just enough offense to steal a victory from the Huskies. Heather Berman pitched seven strong innings of scoreless softball to earn the shutout and tie the weekend series at one game apiece. In the rubber match, Cortland put three on the board and cruised to victory behind Cherylann Tully’s no-hit shutout performance.

After taking two out of three from UConn, Cortland (5-1) sits alone atop the conference standings, two games clear of UConn (3-3). The club will now shut it down until spring when they resume conference play with two weekend series against Syracuse and UMass.

April 16-18, 2009
Cary, NC

The SUNY Cortland softball club competed at the 2009 NCSA World Series for the second consecutive season, after finishing their season 11-1 and wrapping up the automatic bid to the post-season tournament.

Entering the tournament, Cortland was seeded 7th in the 16-team field and was placed in a four-team pool with Navy, Air Force, and Kansas State. On Thursday, Cortland opened up pool play with a hard-fought 6-5 loss to Air Force. In the afternoon game, the Red Dragons used an offensive explosion to hold off Navy 22-20 in a 3+ hour game. In the nightcap, Cortland was exhausted and lost to Kansas State in a blowout, 18-0, to finish pool play with an overall record of 1-2 heading into Friday competition.

In double-elimination tournament play on Friday, Cortland earned a 9 seed and faced off against 8th seeded Ohio State. The club dropped the game 6-2 and fell into the losers bracket where they met up with the previous day’s opponent, Kansas State. The second time around, Cortland played well, but not well enough, falling to KSU 4-2 and eliminating them from the tournament. Cortland finished with a tournament record of 1-4. Despite the losses, Cortland did improve on last year’s 0-5 performance and hopes to return to the tournament next season. Congratulations to the SUNY Cortland softball club on an impressive season and a conference championship!
