The SUNY Cortland golf club sent two members to compete at this year’s 8th Annual National Collegiate Golf Championship at the Silverstone Golf Course in Las Vegas. John Carhart & Chris Poplarski qualified for the event by winning a local qualifying event at Salmon Creek Country Club in Spencerport, NY. In a two-person scramble format, the pair combined to shoot a 10-under 62 to win the event and qualify for the national tournament in Las Vegas.

In Las Vegas, Carhart & Poplarski performed well, finishing the day with a 5-under score of 67, good enough for a tie for fourth place with the University of North Carolina and three shots off first place winner Arizona State. This is the third time SUNY Cortland has had club members qualify for the tournament. Congratulations to John Carhart & Chris Poplarski for an incredible showing on the national stage!

In a late fall matchup, Cortland played host to NCSA North Atlantic - North conference newcomer UConn on Sunday. The two clubs played a triple-header that could have potentially decided which team will be awarded the conference’s automatic bid to the NCSA World Series. Despite the late date, both teams played their games under sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 60’s and lower 70’s throughout the day.

In the first game, Cortland fell behind 1-0 early before tying the game 1-1 in the next inning. The score would stay unchanged until the top half of the 7th when UConn put four on the board, taking a 5-1 lead and earning them a victory in game 1. Cortland’s Tara Forester went 3 for 3 in the loss. The second game saw the Red Dragons rebound with excellent defense, superb pitching, and just enough offense to steal a victory from the Huskies. Heather Berman pitched seven strong innings of scoreless softball to earn the shutout and tie the weekend series at one game apiece. In the rubber match, Cortland put three on the board and cruised to victory behind Cherylann Tully’s no-hit shutout performance.

After taking two out of three from UConn, Cortland (5-1) sits alone atop the conference standings, two games clear of UConn (3-3). The club will now shut it down until spring when they resume conference play with two weekend series against Syracuse and UMass.

On Saturday, October 24th, 9 members of the SUNY Cortland running club completed their third annual “To Utica & Back” run. While the weather prevented the club from completing the “and back” portion of the run, the club did break their time of 12 hours to Utica by running there in just over 10 hours. Money raised from the event will be donated to a charity of the club’s choosing. Congratulations to the SUNY Cortland running club on this impressive achievement!

Glastonbury, CT

The SUNY Cortland roller hockey club began their second season of conference play this past weekend in Glastonbury, CT with three league games. Looking to pick up where they left off last season, Cortland was matched up against Ithaca in the season opener. The Red Dragons dominated play from the start, getting four goals from Tommy Farr and another from Sean Glynn - and that was just in the first period. Michael Barbariantz (2G) and Harris Barton combined to score three goals in the second to take an 8-0 lead over the Bombers going into the third. Miguel Valle and Bryan Buchalski each added a short-handed goal to finish off the scoring as Cortland rolled, 10-0. Dan Titterton added four assists and Lou Vetri made 23 saves in net in the win.

Game two pitted Cortland against UMass - Amherst. Cortland’s Chris Poplarski started the scoring with a short-handed goal in the first period, but the score would be tied at 1 after the first. In the second, UM-A scored two power-play goals and another even strength goal to take a 4-2 lead after the second. Cortland would rally in the third, getting goals from Miguel Valle and Poplarski to tie the game at 4. UM-A took a 5-4 lead late in the period, but Cortland responded and Poplarski finished off the hat-trick with another short-handed goal. Final score: Cortland 5, UMass - Amherst 5.

In the third and final game of the weekend, Cortland got all of their scoring done in the first period behind two goals from Tommy Farr and another from Brendan Joyce. Northeastern fought back in the second, scoring three goals of their own and tying the score for the final period. In the third, Cortland received stellar goaltending from Bryan Buchalski (24 saves) and the Red Dragons managed a 3-3 tie against the Huskies.

After the weekend, Cortland owns a 1-0-2 record, good enough for 4 points and a fourth place standing in the nine team league. The club will continue league play after the winter break. Check back soon for updates and results!
