On the campus of St. Lawrence University, the Cortland men’s rugby club dropped a tough 47-0 loss to Syracuse University. Playing in freezing temperatures, pouring rain, and on flooded fields, the club got behind early and couldn’t find their stride until late in the 2nd half. Early injuries to key players also contributed to the loss.

Earlier this season, Cortland lost a close contest at home to Syracuse, 11-6.

The loss eliminates the club from the New York State Rugby Conference playoffs. They finish the season with a 4-3 overall record in their first season in the Premier Division I section of the conference. Congratulations to the Cortland Warriors for a great first season in Division I!

Double Elimination Results:
Round 1 - Cortland 10, Binghamton 2
Round 2 - Cortland 10, Niagara 3
Round 3 – Cortland 3, Ithaca 1
Finals – Cortland 6, Ithaca 4

On Sunday, October 29th the Cortland Women’s Lacrosse Club hosted their first fall tournament. Opponents included Binghamton University, Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Niagara University. Cortland went 4-0 on the day, capped off by a come-from-behind win against local rival Ithaca in the finals to earn the title of Tournament Champions. In the championship game, Cortland jumped out to a 1-0 lead, only to see Ithaca rattle off the next 3 to take a two goal lead. Trailing 4-2 at the half, Cortland rallied in the 2nd half for a 6-4 final. Jenna Bremiller’s free-position goal and Kaela Dear’s goal off of a Krysti Frey assist were defining moments in the game.

Despite hurricane like conditions, the team felt they stayed together and played like a true team. With outstanding transition from the midfield, the offense was able to score many crucial goals and ensure wins for Cortland. The defense worked hard and really held it together at the other end of the field, making it difficult for their opponents to score. Each player made a significant contribution to the team, and overall it was their best performance of the season.

The fall tournament concludes competitive play for the fall semester. Check back soon for updates on the women’s lacrosse club as they schedule games for the spring!
