Men’s Team Handball Results

The men’s team handball club participated in its first team tournament of the season on November 18th and 19th. The tournament was hosted at West Point by Northeast Team Handball Conference member Army. Results from each of Cortland’s games are listed below:

Saturday results:
Cortland 11, Army 32
Cortland 7, Chaudiere (2) 47
Cortland 21, NYAC 37
Cortland 10, New England 0

Sunday’s results:
Cortland 28, Chaudiere (2) 50
Cortland 20, Alberta 40
Cortland 23, Sherbrooke 38

Overall, the club finished the weekend with a 1-6 record. Goalkeepers Marc Fox and Shawn Briscoe played well in net for Cortland, while John Williams provided an offensive spark and played tough defense throughout.

Women’s Volleyball Weekend Results

The SUNY Cortland women’s volleyball club competed in 2 tournaments this past weekend at Binghamton University and Cornell University, respectively.

On Saturday, the field consisted of Oswego, Binghamton, Pennsylvania University, and Albany. The Red Dragons finished 4-4 in pool play, advancing to the gold bracket of the tournament to face Penn. Cortland won the first game 25-23 before dropping the final two games (29-31, 13-15), giving Penn the victory.

On Sunday, the pool consisted of Albany, Cornell, Ithaca, and Syracuse University. Cortland competed well against Cornell and Ithaca, but had some trouble against Albany and Syracuse. The club advanced to the silver bracket of the tournament before dropping the semi-final match to Albany.

Overall, the club feels they were very successful in their first conference tournaments of the season. Cortland competes in the Northeast Women’s Volleyball Club League (NWVCL). Check back soon for tournament updates and a schedule of upcoming events!

Ice Hockey Club 2-0-1 At Syracuse University Tournament

The Cortland ice hockey club went 2-0-1 this past weekend at a tournament hosted by Syracuse University. After the weekend, the Red Dragons overall record stands at 9-3-1.

On Friday, Cortland opened the tournament with a gritty 9-5 win over local rival Oswego.
Goals: Andrew Carpenter (1,2), Mike Cerasoli (1, 2), Shawn Pulvermiller (1), Chris Marshall (1), Dan Cook (1), Joe Mulhern (1), and Rob Weilert (1)
Assists: Brent Davis (1), Dan Cook (1), Rob Weilert (1), James Rowlands (1), Joe Mulhern (1), Greg Huether (1), Mike Madden (1, 2), Chris Curley (1, 2), Mike Cerasoli (1), and Chad Daniels (1).
Saves: Evan Jonat (25)
On Saturday, Cortland skated to a 3-3 tie against eventual tournament champion Hobart. Because the event was a tournament, a shootout determined which team would move on. Hobart beat Cortland 1-0 in the shootout to advance in the tournament.
Goals: Dan Cook (2), Mike Cerasoli (3), and Dustin Good (1)

Saves: Troy Ladue (26)
In the nightcap, Cortland beat Fredonia 3-1. Lighting the lamp for Cortland was Greg Huether (1), Rob Weilert (2), and Mike Cerasoli (4).
Assists: Mike Cerasoli (2), Joe Mulhern (2), Mike Madden (3), Chad Daniels (2), Greg Huether (2), and Dan Cook (2).
Saves: Erik Lasky (20)

Mike Cerasoli led the Red Dragons with 6 points (4G, 2A).
Cortland’s home game against Colgate, scheduled for Friday, December 8th has been canceled. The club is currently in the process of trying to schedule another game. Check back later in the week for a possible update.

Women’s Basketball Club Victorious On Senior Night And On The Road

The women’s basketball team recently added 2 more wins to their resume, beating Colgate at home and the University of Rochester on the road. On senior night, Cortland rallied from a ten point deficit in the 1st half to post a 34-29 victory over visiting Colgate University. Seniors Rose Graham and Jenea Castanza were honored before the game.

More recently, Cortland edged out a close victory against the University of Rochester 38-37 on the road. The victory concludes the women’s basketball club’s fall season.
