The men’s ice hockey club swept through some tough competition last weekend, beating rival NYCHL members Binghamton, Hobart, and Oswego in three closely contested games.

Against Hobart, Cortland overcame deficits of 3-1, 5-3, and 6-5 to beat the Statesmen 7-6 on the road in overtime. Mike Cerasoli recorded the hat trick and Dan Cook netted the game winner in OT to complete the comeback victory. Mike Madden and Shawn Pulvermiller also recorded goals for the Red Dragons and Evan Jonat stopped enough shots between the pipes to notch the win.

On February 18th, Cortland got its revenge over Oswego, winning a hard fought 4-3 game on the road. The Lakers had previously handed the Red Dragons a 7-2 loss on home ice back on January 28th. Dan Cook netted two goals for Cortland, while Mike Madden and Mike Cerasoli scored one apiece. Goaltender Evan Jonat made 41 saves in net for the one goal win.

Against Binghamton, Cortland kept the lamp lit, posting 7 goals in a high-scoring 7-4 win over the Bearcats. Greg Huether and Mike Cerasoli each posted 2 goals to lead the way, and Chris Marshall, Sean Prince, and Eric D’Appolonia added goals of their own to backup goaltenders Evan Jonat and Troy Ladue, who combined their efforts in net for the win. The win over Binghamton puts Cortland’s overall record at 13-4-1 heading into post-season play.

This weekend Cortland will host the New York College Hockey League (NYCHL) Championships. Chapel Hill, NC

The women’s team handball club left Chapel Hill, NC with a 2-1 record and a bitter taste in their mouths from a closely contested 2-goal loss to last year’s NETHC conference champion North Carolina.

In the opening game, Shirley Tyler drew 3 penalty shots and Lindsay Coons converted all three into goals, as Cortland handled West Point 18-15. The Red Dragons played solid defense throughout and were effective in shutting down Army’s leading scorer.

In the second game, Cortland dominated Furman 23-11, only allowing 2 goals in the first half. Lindsay Coons scored 8 goals and Hitomi Oguro added 6 of her own in a match that was never really close.

The third game left the Red Dragons heartbroken and looking forward to a potential rematch against last year’s NETHC champion North Carolina Tar Heels. Cortland led the entire game until the final 2 minutes. UNC rallied for the tie and eventually broke it with the first of 2 breakaway goals. Final score: Cortland 15, UNC 17. Cortland finishes the regular season with a 1-1 record against UNC.

Cortland’s next contest will be the NETHC tournament in Quebec, CA over the weekend of March 3-4. Check back soon for results!

Cortland, NY

The women’s basketball club came out strong in the second half and never looked back, doubling up the University of Rochester 50-24 at home. Leading the way with 13 points was Cortland freshman Emily Badlam. Sophomore Aimee Stormes added 11, while Felicia Strauss, Amanda Barrilo, and Lindsay Bakker each scored 4.

Cortland trailed early in what looked to be a defensive game before exploding in the second half behind 3-pointers by Badlam and sophomore Nicole Corcoran. Fellow sophomore guard Jenna Rourke provided solid defense in the half court and helped to pace a solid offensive attack by the Red Dragons.

Today’s game also marked the last home contest coached by assistant coach Quentin Meritt. Meritt has helped to coach the Red Dragons for 4 successful seasons.
Cortland travels to Colgate to take on the Red Raiders next Saturday at 2pm before finishing out their home schedule on Saturday, March 3rd against local rival Ithaca College. Game time is set for 1pm in the Moffett gym.
