Baseball Finishes 1-2 At Willimsport Tournament

The Cortland baseball club participated in a tournament in Williamsport, PA this past weekend, finishing with 1 win and 2 losses on the weekend. In their 1st game, Tim Holder went 2-3 with 2 RBI, 1 R, and 2 SB and Mike Torres went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored to carry Cortland to a 7-4 win over Robert Morris. Chris Mekelburg finished the contest 1-2 with a run scored and Brian Lynam finished 1-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a SB  in the win. Pitcher Josh Britt picked up the win (1-0, 2 IP, 1 ER, K) for the Red Dragons.

Following the win, Cortland suffered a pair of 1-run losses to Lafayette and Maryland. Against Lafayette, Chris Mekelburg (2-4, 2 RBI), Mike Torres (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Joe Guiffre all contributed offensively. Tim Holder (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3 SB) and Casey O’Keefe (0-0, 5 SB) combined for 8 stolen bases in a 13-12 loss.

Against Maryland, Mike Torres had four hits (4-4, 3 RBI, R) and Brian Lynam added two more (2-3, RBI, 3 R), but Cortland was unable to defeat Maryland, falling 9-8. Casey O’Keefe (2-4, 2 R, 2 SB), Joe Guiffre (2-4, RBI, R), and CJ Wilkinson (1-3, R) also added offense in the loss.

Cycling Club Results - UMass

After not racing in the ECCC last weekend, the Cortland Cycling team took to the road to battle it out in the mountains of Amherst, MA. Saturday morning Elyse Loughlin battled through the cross country’s many switchbacks to finish 8th out of the 10 starters in the women’s A class. Saturday afternoon was filled with runs on the dual slalom (DS) course constructed by the UMass team. Always a pleasure to watch, Nicolas Fioretti qualified 2nd out of 17 in the men’s A class using his BMX background to his advantage. After passing through the first elimination round, he lost to Kyle Hickey of UVM. Nic finished 5th overall in dual slalom due to single elimination. Elyse raced in the DS event for her first time ever, finishing 5th overall in the Women’s A after a close race with the Cross Country leader from UConn. Sunday, Elyse raced the short track course at Jiminy Peak in the morning. Taking on its fast paced course, Elyse finished 6th in the field. Sunday afternoon consisted of Nic taking practice runs on the technical downhill course to finding the fast lines through the rocky woods. Nic did the dragons proud, coming in 6th place out of 26 racers in men’s A. The team is a force to be reckoned with this year holding 2nd place in division II of the ECCC, and hopes to move up to 1st at the Eastern Conference Championships on Plattekill Mtn., October 13th and 14th.

Field Hockey Starts Season With 2 Shutout Wins

The Cortland field hockey club started their fall season with two shutout victories over Geneseo and local rival Ithaca College. On Saturday, Dana Roberts and Steve Eggleston scored and Cortland goalies Sarah Pitcher and Christine Brown split time in goal to notch Cortland’s first shutout of the weekend. The Red Dragons continued their shutout streak on Sunday, holding off Ithaca College to earn a 1-0 win. Amanda Cory scored the lone goal in the win, which improved the club’s record to 2-0 on the season. Goalkeeper Sarah Pitcher got some much needed help from defender Cecilia Galbraith who made a save near the end of regulation time, keeping the game from going into overtime.

The field hockey club returns to action this weekend at home vs. Fredonia at 11am on Stadium White. Admission is free!

Women’s Soccer 2-1-0 at Home Tournament

The Cortland women’s soccer club hosted a 4-team round-robin tournament this past weekend. Other teams attending included SUNY Oswego, Cornell University, and Colgate University.
Cortland’s dropped their first game against Cornell, 2-0. Cornell would wind up 3-0 on the day, posting three shutout victories. The Red Dragons got their first two goals of the day in the first half of their second game against SUNY Oswego. Carrie Mallison opened the scoring five minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Becky Schnirel assisted on the goal. The second and final goal of the game came late in the second half when Corinne Kopytowski netted a pass from Jada Klein. The two goals would hold up against the Lakers and goalkeeper Katie Meyer stopped all Oswego shots in the shutout win.

In the third game Cortland used three first half goals by Stephanie Profeta, Jada Klein, and Cheryl Thomas to propel themselves to a 5-2 win over Colgate. Cortland added two more in the second half to secure the win and a 2-1-0 record on the day.

The women’s soccer club returns to action at home on Saturday, September 29th at 1pm on Stadium White against Albany.
