Cortland, NY
The women’s basketball club kicked off their season by hosting a 3-team tournament attended by Cornell and Northeastern. While the results weren’t quite what the Red Dragons were hoping for, the tournament itself was a success with all four games being decided by 5 or less points and a crowd of nearly 100 in the stands.
In the first game, Cortland jumped out to a 10-0 lead over Northeastern and led by 7 at the break with a score of 21-14. However, Northeastern mounted an impressive comeback in the second half, finally taking the lead at 39-38 with under 5 minutes remaining. The two clubs traded baskets over the next few minutes and Cortland found themselves with possession and down just one point with 8.3 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately for the Red Dragons, Northeastern stole the ball and took it down the court for 2 points. The basket left Cortland on the losing end of a 3-point game. Final score: Northeastern 46, Cortland 43. Cortland’s Felicia Strauss finished with a team high 12 points and Whitney Button scored 7 in the loss.
The third game of the tournament saw Cortland take on the Big Red of Cornell University. Cortland got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing by 7 at the half, down 27-20. Aimee Stormes had 6 points in the 1st half to lead the Cortland scoring. The second half would be Cortland’s turn to make a run, as the Red Dragons slowly chipped away at Cornell’s lead, taking the lead themselves at one point before falling behind late. Cortland outscored Cornell 26-24 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough, as Cornell would hang on for a 51-46 victory.
The final game of the afternoon pitted Cortland against Northeastern for the 2nd time. This time around, the game would be a defensive battle with both teams playing good defense and shooting poorly. Northeastern led 16-14 at the break and used 20 second half points to push Northeastern to a 36-31 victory. Northeastern finished the tournament with a record of 2-1, Cornell with a record of 2-0, and Cortland with a record of 0-3.
