Great Season Comes To An End With Loss To Rutgers
A great season came to a sour end in the NECHL semi finals as Rutgers University defeated the Cortland State Club Hockey team by a score of 7-3. In a game that saw Rutgers take a 4-0 lead the Dragons never quit on first year coach Jeffrey Seakan as they made it 4-2 before the end of the second period with 2 goals from Kyle Smith. The momentum would be short lived as the Knights would make it 5-2 within the first few minutes of the third period. Greg Huether’s goal would make it a 6-3 game but that was as close as the Dragons ever got. Kevin Medrano had a solid game in net keeping the Dragons within striking distance.

“Sometimes the bounces don’t go your way. But I’m proud of the way this team battled all season.” said Seakan after the game. After starting the year 0-4, the team finishes with a record of 13-9-0-1in it’s first year of ACHA Division 1 play. The future still looks promising for the Dragons as they will return a lot of players from this years squad.

The team would like to thank all their fans for their continued support throughout the season!

Stayed tuned for information regarding the 2008-2009 season in the months to come.

Dragons Skate Past Bombers, Advance To Play #1 Rutgers
In the fourth and final meeting of the season, the Cortland State Club Hockey team defeated Ithaca College in the first round of the NECHL playoffs. As usual, the game was physical and intense as these bitter rivals battled it out to see whose season would continue and whose would come to an end. After a scoreless first period the Dragons exploded for 3 goals in the second period. Scoring was Dan Cook (2) and Kyle Smith. Ithaca would cut the game to 3-1 before Smith would score again to keep the Bombers out of reach.

Kevin Medrano played another great game between the pipes to earn his 8th win on the season.

Dragons Head Into Playoffs With Momentum After Win Over Oswego
In the final game of the NECHL regular season the Cortland State Club Hockey team avenged what some consider the worst loss in the club’s history with a 5-2 victory over rival Oswego. Kyle Smith scored his first of 3 goals on the day just 11 seconds into the contest off assists from Greg Huether and Dan Cook. The Laker’s would tie the game in the second period before Smith would strike again with a shot over the goaltender’s glove. Huether would make it a 3-1 lead with a power play goal. After Oswego cut it to a 3-2 game, Smith would come through again giving the Dragons a 4-2 lead. Greg Huether then put the nail in the coffin with the empty net goal in the final minute of play.

Goalie Kevin Medrano continued his strong play making 33 saves to earn his 7th win of the season.

The Red Dragons finish their first Division 1 season with a 12-8-0-1 (6-6 NECHL) and are seeded fourth in the first ever NECHL playoffs. This sets up a first round matchup with long time rival Ithaca. The game will be Friday night at 830pm at the Oswego Campus Center Hockey Arena. Admission to the game is 5$. The club is offering a free bus to the game for SUNY Cortland students. A sign-up sheet is located in the Rec Sports Office, Room E-245 Park Center.
