Cortland, NY
The SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse club erased a year of misfortune against Ithaca on Sunday, beating the Bombers 11-6. Cortland had lost both previous contests to Ithaca in the 2007-2008 season 11-10 and 12-10. Cortland opened the scoring early and dominated offensively in the first half, taking a 5-1 lead at halftime. Ithaca battled back, closing the gap to 6-4 in favor of the Red Dragons halfway through the second half. But Cortland, led by Erinn Wilcox (3 goals) and Britt Gale (2 goals) put an end to the comeback, rattling off 5 straight goals to take a commanding 11-5 lead late in the half. Ithaca added another tally late to make the final score 11-6 in favor of Cortland.
Nicole Prechtl (2 goals), Whitney Stevenson (1 goal, 2 assists), AnneMarie Vitchers (1 goal, 2 assists), Dana Zaccaro (1 goal, 1 assist), Julie Park (goal), and Laurie Vitchers (goal) also contributed to the Cortland attack. The Cortland defense, backed by goaltender Sam Anderson, also played well, shutting down the Ithaca offense in the first half.
Cortland will play their next home game on Sunday, October 19th against Broome Community College. Game time is set for 1:30pm on Stadium White.
