Ice Hockey Opens Season With Win On The Road

The pursuit of an NECHL title for the Cortland ice hockey club began last Friday night in Binghamton. Cortland’s Kyle Smith and Zach Haluszczak each recorded hat tricks for the Red Dragons and Pat Sullivan rounded off the scoring for the night as Cortland put up seven goals against the Bearcats on the road. Mike Cerasoli added three assists in the victory.

The game was the season opener for the Red Dragons, who look to return to the NECHL playoffs, hosted by Rutgers in February of 2009. Cortland earned the #4 seed in the division last season and advanced to the semifinals by way of a victory over Ithaca in the quarterfinals.

The Red Dragons will play their next two contests on the road before returning for their home opener on Saturday, 11/1 against Binghamton. Game time on 11/1 is set for 4:30pm at the Alumni Arena in Park Center. Admission to all games is free! Come down and support your Cortland ice hockey club!

Softball Takes Two From Syracuse

The Cortland softball club dominated Syracuse once again on Sunday, October 26th winning the first game of an afternoon doubleheader 11-0. Cortland scored seven runs in the second inning alone and Michelle Corso had her second inside-the-park homerun of the season. Alissa Karsten pitched well for Cortland, giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out four. In the second game, Cortland pushed their winning streak to four with another victory over the Orange. The final score was 8-0 in favor of Cortland, with the club scoring all 8 runs on only seven hits. Christina Scala also struck out four during her time on the mound. Cortland’s final game of the fall season is this Saturday, November 1st at the Starr Road Complex off Owego street. Come down and cheer on the SUNY Cortland softball club!

Cortland Hosts Fall Lacrosse Tournament

The Cortland Men’s Lacrosse club hosted a tournament this weekend with Cornell, Ithaca, and the University of Buffalo all in attendance. Each team played three games consecutively. The day started off well for Cortland, as they opened with a 9-5 victory over Ithaca. John Grosse, Brendan Grace, Chris Daly, Aaron Zajac, Jesse Wenk, and John Cooney all scored for the Red Dragons.

Though Cortland struggled defensively in the second game over Buffalo, they played hard in the last game over Cornell. Cortland had the game tied 7-7, until the last three seconds of the game. Cornell scored to steal a last-second victory over the Red Dragons, 8-7. Overall, the game was very exciting up until the last second.

The club’s fall season is over, but they look forward to defending their NCLL Division-II National Championship in the spring.

Men’s Rugby Dominates Canisius To Finish Season

The SUNY Cortland men’s rugby club closed out their fall season with a 45-5 win over visiting Canisius. In the mud and rain, the Warriors used a steady offensive attack to slowly dismantle the Crabbies. The win leaves Cortland alone in sixth place in the NYSRC Men’s Premier D-I division with a total of 17 league points to finish the season. Canisius finished the season 0-7 in league play. Cortland closed the season on a three game winning streak after losing their first four matches of the season. The club looks to rebound in the spring with a strong showing in tournament play. Check back in the spring for tournament schedules and results.

Men’s Lax Wins Big in their Season Opener

The Cortland Men’s Lacrosse club played and defeated Syracuse this past Saturday, October 18, winning 13-3. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 1-1, but shortly into the second quarter Cortland took over, scoring 4 goals in the second quarter alone.

Contributing goals for Cortland were John Grosse, Brian Sciera, Aaron Zajac, Brendan Grace, Gregg Schaper, Jesse Wenk, and Eric Robinson. Cortland goalie Max Wade only allowed one goal.

The Men’s Lacrosse club will be holding a tournament this Saturday, 9am at Stadium Red and White. Come out and support the club as they play Ithaca, Cornell, and the University of Buffalo!
