January 23-25, 2009
Reading, PA/Scranton, PA/Ithaca, NY
The Cortland ice hockey club returned to campus after a tough weekend stretch that included three away games in as many days. On Friday night, Cortland paid a visit to Reading, PA to meet NECHL leading opponent Penn State Berks. Cortland trailed 3-0 at the end of the first period, but kept the game close into the third period. Kyle Smith scored 33 seconds into the third period to close to gap to 3-1, but Penn State Berks added 3 more goals to secure the 6-1 victory over the Red Dragons. Nathan Mellow made 26 saves in the loss.
On Saturday night, Cortland skated into Scranton, PA for the second of two meetings this season against the University of Scranton. Cortland captain Mike Cerasoli and senior Greg Huether each scored in the second period to keep the score tied at 2 heading into the final frame, but once again, the third period was unkind to Cortland. Scranton notched one goal in the third period to sweep the season series and earn a 3-2 win over the visiting Red Dragons.
On Sunday, a tired Cortland club made the trip to Ithaca to visit the Big Red at Lynah rink. The game would prove to be an offensive explosion for both teams, as 18 total goals were scored. Unfortunately, Cortland came up on the short end again, dropping a hard fought 11-7 decision to Cornell. Cornell jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period, but Cortland stormed back in the second with 4 second period goals to trail by 1 heading into the third. Unfortunately, the third period troubles would continue for Cortland, and the Red Dragons allowed 5 goals in the third period while only adding two of their own. Cortland’s Mike Cerasoli recorded a hat trick in the loss, while Luke Hagen, Neal Purcell, Tyler Shimizu, and Kyle Smith each added a goal of their own.
Cortland’s road matchup against Syracuse University which was scheduled for Wednesday, 1/28 was postponed due to poor weather conditions. A makeup date for that game has not yet been announced.
The road does not get any easier for the club, as they take to the road for two more games this weekend against Rochester and Rutgers before heading home on February 7th and 8th for games against Cornell and St. Bonaventure. Check back next week for more updates!

Cortland, NY
The SUNY Cortland ice hockey club hung division-leading Rutgers for two periods before falling off in the third. The Scarlet Knights scored twice late in the first period before Cortland’s Jon Namisnak tallied the first club goal in the opening minute of the second period. Rutgers regained their two goal lead a few minutes later, but Cortland answered right away with a goal by Neal Purcell.
Cortland trailed 3-2 entering the third period, but several Red Dragon penalties led to four goals by Rutgers in the final frame. Neal Purcell scored late to make it a 3-goal margin, but Rutgers added the empty net goal to make the final score 7-3 in favor of the Scarlet Knights.
Cortland’s record now stands at 3-3-0, good enough for 5th place in the NECHL. The club heads down to Pennsylvania this weekend for games against Penn State - Berks and the University of Scranton. On Sunday, they will travel to Lynah Rink to take on Cornell University. Check back next week for updated results and contest reports!
