The men’s volleyball club hosted their annual tournament this past Sunday. Despite an impressive 6-2 record in pool play, the NCVF Div-II nationally fourth ranked Red Dragons were upset in the semifinals against Div-I Syracuse-A. Cortland entered two teams into the 10 team tournament that included Siena, Cornell, NCCC, RIT, Colgate, Ithaca, and two teams from Syracuse. Cortland-A rolled through their first three pool-play matches of day, beating Ithaca, NCCC and Syracuse-B in straight sets. In their final pool play match of the day, Cortland lost a hard-fought battle to rival RIT, 22-25 and 15-25. The loss dropped them into second place in their bracket and forced a semifinal matchup against Syracuse-A. Cortland-A would lose the match in straight sets, 22-25 and 18-25 to end their day.

Cortland’s B-team finished pool play with a record of 3-5 against Colgate (1-1), Syracuse-A (0-2), Cornell (0-2), and Siena (2-0), but failed in their bid to qualify for the tournament playoffs.

The club plans on participating in the regional tournament in Maryland and the NIRSA national tournament in Kansas City in early April. Check back soon for updated results and schedule information!

Cortland, NY

The SUNY Cortland men’s basketball team played host to Cornell University’s club team this past Sunday. Cornell opened the game on a 19-0 run in what looked to be a blowout. Cortland slowly chipped away at the lead, getting the score as close as 8 late in the first half, and trailing by 10 at the break.

In the second half, Cortland narrowed the margin to as few as 5, but each time they came close, Cornell went on scoring runs to hold off the Red Dragon comeback. Early fouls in the second half put Cornell in the double bonus and they would hit their free throws down the stretch to put away Cortland, 78-64 . Scott Valens and Elliott Miller led the way for Cortland scoring 16 points apiece. Teammate Travis Sahagian added 6 points on 6-7 shooting from the free throw line.
