The Cortland Men’s Volleyball club played host to the EIVA D-I and D-II championships on Sunday, March 29 in the Lusk Field House. Cortland played some tough matches in pool play against Cornell and Army. The club started the day by winning a tough 5-set match against Army, (25-13, 23-25, 28-26, 23-25, 15-8). Cortland then faced a tough Cornell club and lost in straight sets ( 15-25, 27-29, 18-25). After splitting their matches in pool play, the club advanced to the quarterfinals where they met one-time rival RIT. The Red Dragons defeated the Tigers 2-0 (25-20, 25-18) and advanced to the semi-finals where they had to face Cornell yet again. Cortland played two tough sets but were unable to scratch out a win against the Big Red (17-25, 29-31), ending their two year run as state champions.

During the tournament, the EIVA All-Conference team was announced. Two players from Cortland, Eric Buggs and Bryan Patterson, were selected to the All-Conference team. Congratulations to Bryan and Eric! Cortland is off to Maryland this weekend to compete in the regional playoffs before heading off to Kansas City, MO for the NIRSA National Tournament. Good luck to the SUNY Cortland men’s volleyball club!

Cheerleading Tryout Information

Posted on March 30th, 2009 in Cheerleading by ClubManager

SUNY Cortland Cheerleading will be holding its spring tryouts in the Gymnastics Room (D-309) at Park Center on April 27, 29 and 30 from 9pm - 11pm.

If you are interested in trying out, you should attend all of these dates. On the 27th there will be a sideline and motion sequence to learn for performance on the 30th.

For all three days you will be judged on work ethic, attitude, and the ability to pick up on skills.

There will be a basic rubric for tryouts which will be posted soon. This will outline further requirements.

If you can not attend these dates or you are an incoming freshman/transfer for next year, you can contact us and send in a skills tape for us to review. We will have the team selected for football season a week following the final tryout date.

You can email us a link to your tryout video (if you post on facebook or youtube) to cortlandcheer@gmail.com
If you want to send in a DVD or video, you can send it to:

SUNY Cortland Recreational Sports
E-245 Park Center
Attn: Cheerleading
PO Box 2000
Cortland, NY 13045

Guidelines for Video Submission:

Everyone should include 3 jumps (one must be a toe touch, another must be a pike, and a third jump of your choice). We would like to see jumps connected, and will score those who connect multiple jumps higher. Also if you connect tumbling to the end of jumps, it will score higher.

Everyone should show their best running tumbling pass, along with their best standing tumbling skill. Spots are ok, but non-spotted skills will be scored higher. Remember, technique will be rewarded, not just difficulty.

Fliers should show a front flexible skill (heel stretch, bow and arrow, etc) and back flexible skills (scale, scorpion, etc). Each stunt sequence should have a cradle dismount; spinning down will be rewarded. Multiple body positions should be displayed, and you can connect all skills into one sequence.

Bases and backspots should be able to hold one legged skills in an extended position, along with catching a spinning dismount.

Showing versatility (being able to do different positions: base, backspot, flier) will be a plus.

Any questions, please feel free to contact us at CortlandCheer@gmail.com

Thanks for your time, and we really look forward to seeing you at tryouts!

Ice Hockey Falls Just Short In NECHL Semis

Posted on March 2nd, 2009 in Ice Hockey (Men's) by ClubManager

February 27-28, 2009
Somerset, NJ

The SUNY Cortland ice hockey club fell just short in their attempt to reach and win the NECHL championship this past weekend in New Jersey. After finishing 5-2 in their final 7 games, a hot Cortland club skated into the Protec Ponds Ice Arena, home of the Rutgers University club team, for a weekend of playoff action. Cortland entered the tournament ranked 4th in the six-team field.

On Friday night, the Red Dragons met up with defending champion and #5 seed Oswego. Goaltender Nathan Mellow made 30 saves in net and Mike Cerasoli scored twice and added an assist on the way to a 5-2 win over the Lakers. Zach Haluszczak, Neal Purcell, and Greg Huether also added goals for Cortland. With the win, the club advanced to the NECHL semifinals for the second time in as many years, where they met #1 seed Penn State Berks.

In two previous regular season games against PSB, Cortland was 0-2-0 and was outscored 13-3. On Saturday, the Red Dragons would prove to be a different team and would push Penn State Berks to the edge of elimination. After a first period that saw no goals, Penn State Berks would score 3 in the second to take a 3-2 lead into the final frame. Cortland rallied in the third to tie the score at 4 and send the game into overtime. When an extra session wasn’t enough to decide a winner, the game went to a shootout. Despite an incredible team effort, Cortland’s season would come to an end as Penn State Berks won the shootout to advance to the championship game. Mike Cerasoli, Kyle Smith, and Zach Haluszczak all scored in the loss. Penn State Berks would go on to lose by a score of 5-3 to Cornell in the championship game to earn the 2008-2009 NECHL crown in their first year in the league.

Cortland finishes the 08-09 campaign with an overall record of 10-11-2 in 23 total games. Congratulations to the SUNY Cortland ice hockey club for an incredible season! Check back next year for 2009-2010 schedule information!
