I think if you talk to any pro driver, you'll find that have awareness of the risks, but they have to put those thoughts out of their mind while they do their job. It is certainly a consideration when they are working on the cars though. Look up Alan Bradshaw's recent departure from his Top Fuel dragster team to see how serious the issue is to a driver.
