So it’s no surprise to anyone that the Seattle Super Sonics are now the Oklahoma City Thunder. This is mainly because the colors, logos, and name have been leaked weeks ago. But still the organization felt the need to have a press conference with little kiddies and all to present this????

Oklahoma City Thunder Logo

UGH!!! Honestly it’s hideous! What is so bright and colorful about Oklahoma? I certainly don’t think of bright sunny colors with Oklahoma, especially when your name is Thunder?

Wouldn’t thunder represent a mad, dirty, chaotic storm? It would seem so to me, but I guess that can summarize the whole Seattle move anyway… a mad, dirty, chaotic storm!

What do you think of the Thunder name and new logo??

The Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA Finals in a dominating fashion by the score of 131-92, the MVP is Paul Pierce.

Consider the dominat era of the Detroit Pistons close to over. Head Coach, Flip Saunders, announced today that he will NOT return as HC of the Pistons. Saunders was HC for the past three years and lead Detroit to a franchise best 64-18 record in his first year. However, industry sources say his failure of the team to produce in the playoffs is what lead to the decision.

Because apparently being one of the better teams in the NBA is failure! Trust me, Flip will end up somewhere else next year.

I will have more on this story as more information is reported.

vanessabryant__opt1.jpg Cher is that you? Oops, No, it’s Kobe Bryant’s nut-case wife Vanessa. Did she really wear a tutu while Kobe got his MVP award? This definitely deserves a fine by the fashion police!!!

thanks to Perez!

No that wasn’t a typo! Kobe Braynt really scored 2 points in the first half, BUT he finished with a burst of energy scoring 23 in the last 17 minutes. Therefore the Lakers downed the Spurs 89-85 in Game 1.

It’s no shock that Kobe has a performance like this. He is the 2008 MVP afterall, but one has to wonder what the logic behind this was? According to various reports Kobe said he was just trying to “manage” the game in the first half. Yea Kobe, but scoring is good too! If the Lakers didn’t win this one, then everyone and their mother would be screaming that the Spurs have the Lakers number!

Phil Jackson had this to say after the game,

“I thought Kobe went on vacation. I thought he went to Bermuda or somewhere. Maybe he went to the Bermuda Triangle instead of the sideline triangle. But we got him back this quarter.”

Also, the Spurs have a legit fatigue excuse after spending the night in a mechanically inempt 727 instead of a swank New Orleans hotel. Apparently there were no hotels in N.O. because of conventions. But I’m willing to guess that there was a Motel 6 or Holiday Inn available for the team. Maybe the knew they needed a good excuse for the Laker game!?!

Game 2 will really tell us who has a handle on the Western Conference Finals. Watch on Friday at 9 et.

Tim Duncan It was a crazy day in sports today!

Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester threw a no hitter against the KC Royals at Fenway Park. Here are some interesting stats to the game:

  1. Jason Varitek has now caught 4 no hitters, and is the only player in the MLB modern-era to do so (Nomo, Lowe, Bucholz, and Lester)
  2. Jon Lester is the first lefty since 1956 to throw a no no at Fenway (Mel Parnell)
  3. The Red Sox now have 18 no hitters in their history (Dodgers have 20 for the top spot on the list)
  4. Lester never even pitched a complete game before tonight
  5. most importantly, Jon Lester is a cancer survivor at 24

Also today the San Antonio Spurs became one of the few NBA teams to have a road win. They defeated the New Orleans Hornets 91-82 in the Game 7. San Antonio now faces the LA Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. Manu Ginobli lead the team in scoring with 26 and hit 4 critical free throws in the final minute.

The Stanlet Cup Finals are set, Pittsburgh vs. Detroit! The Red Wings defeated the Dallas Stars today in 6 games and with vengance! If there was any doubt the Detroit was lacking effort down the stretch they made sure to make fools out of the doubters tonight! Chris Osgood made 28 saves tonight and Detroit scored 3 in the first period to send the Stars packing with a final of 4-1.

And finally the Cubs defeated the Astros today 7-2, but Geovany Soto had an inside the park HR today for the Cubbies in top of the 4th. However, replays showed that it should’ve been an automatic HR because the ball bounced OFF the yellow line. With my love of the Yanks aside, it seems that Umps have a problem seeing proper HR lately! ;) But great hustle by Soto! Also, Lance the Great went 0-4.

And I’m out of breath, Good Night! The Chick will be in the Bronx tomorrow for the Yanks v. Orioles because I like to torture myself and see this mess in person! :D Make sure you stop by, and maybe buy me a beer or two! ;)

xxoo

Here’s a stat for you for the NBA playoffs, All Road teams in the playoffs are 17-1?!?! The only team to rise out of the amass of boos, taunts, and “white-outs” is the Orlando Magic who only won the game in Toronto by 8 points. So what do we make of this road mess?

I found this nifity little article on my daily Google-scaping, and it has all the reasons why home court advantage DOESN’T matter in the NBA. What?

That’s because basketball is probably the sport where playing at home would matter the least. How so? Well Let’s take a look at what NBA experts commonly throw out at as things that make playing on the road difficult.

1. You’re not staying at home.
This argument would work if you were playing in some low-level minor league and had to stay in a Motel 6 or worse. But in the NBA, guys are staying at the Four Seasons.

2. The flights wear you down. Amazed this is still sometimes used as an argument, considering in the playoffs teams play by conferences, and never travel particularly far. At most, players are on a three hour flight in a cushy jet. In addition to all this, during the playoffs the only time one team is traveling and the other one isn’t is before the opening game.

3. The time delay. This makes some sense during the regular season, makes little sense in the playoffs. Max you’re changing time zones by no more than two hours until potentially the Finals.

4. Schedule. This makes a lot of sense for the regular season, but not in the playoffs since both teams are on the same schedule and never play back-to-back nights.

5. You don’t feel comfortable on an away court (excluding the crowd factor). There’s some rationale for this, but not much. In the NBA, all courts are essentially identical. You’re not going from Astroturf to grass like in the NFL, or suddenly playing with the Green Monster behind you after having just played in a spacious outfield. One argument is that arenas have different backgrounds behind the basket. But ask any NBA player what he’s staring at when he shoots, and it’s the rim, not some advertisement in the background.

6. The crowd factor. This is an argument that rationally doesn’t make a lot of sense whether you’re talking about the visiting team or home team. We’ll take the visiting team first. The visiting team isn’t a group of college kids playing their first game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Most have logged significant time in the NBA and they’ve faced hostile crowds before. Also, considering they’re pros, their focus isn’t on the crowd anyway, but on the court. Any player that gets rattled by a crowd yelling when he shoots a jumper shouldn’t be in the NBA.

The flip side is the home team somehow plays better because they’re in front of their own crowd. There’s some truth that the home team could be looser to a degree playing in front of their own crowd, but then again, they could also be too tight if they feel they have to meet the crowd’s expectations. Basically, the home team’s athletes face the same issue as the ones on the visiting team. Any athlete whose performance is somehow significantly tied to a crowd isn’t a pro athlete. The whole point of being a professional is that you’re consistently good, regardless of the scenario. If a crowd is somehow significantly affecting your play, forget it, you’re not on the floor.

7. The refs. There’s long been a conspiracy theory that NBA refs are influenced by home team fans. They may be influenced by Stern, but in terms of dealing with a crowd, they’re just the same as NBA players. They’re pros. If they were significantly influenced by a crowd, they wouldn’t be an NBA ref. Besides, NBA refs have been torture-tested even more than players, so the amount of abuse they can take is overwhelming. More often than not, criticisms of refs (by players and fans) are based on one’s rooting interests in a game, however minor. Any borderline call immediately makes it seem as if the ref is favoring one side over the other, when in fact that’s anything but the case. There’s a reason why the NBA is the only institution that deems its refs to be objective. Because they’re the only ones that look at them objectively.

So what’s the conclusion? It seems to be that players are psychologically drilled to believe that playing on the road is tougher than it is at home, especially during the playoffs. It’s almost like Pavlov’s dogs. Turn on the light, make the dogs slobber. Put the Celtics on the road, they can’t win.

It’s not that Cleveland’s crowd is the key difference, or that it’s making Cleveland play any better, it’s that Boston has the preconceived notion that the game will be tougher than it otherwise should be.

Think about it. If you’re drilled your whole life by people like Collins and experts and coaches who say playing on the road is hard, then it’s going to seem to hard.

But the truth is, it really isn’t.

800px-quickenloansarena.jpg There is something seriously wrong with the NBA playoff system. Now some of you won’t agree, but it think it is ludicrous that HALF the teams in the league make it to the playoffs! The playoffs in all sports are a long battle to see who is really the number one team. Now records my not always reflect that, but is it too much to ask for to see a team in the playoffs with a winning record? There are two teams (Philadelphia and Atlanta) in the playoffs with a losing record. Part of this is because the Eastern Conference sucks, but is this really a reflection of excellence?

There are teams in other sports that have unbelievable records, but are shut out of their respected playoffs due to a “top seed” in the division. So what is the proper way to conduct a playoff system? Do any of the teams have it right?

Kobe Bryant has made it clear that he wants out of LA, and the Chicago Bulls want him. However, there needs to be a third party involved. According to reports, the Sacramento Kings are interested and there was a deal in place.

Bulls get: Kobe Bryant

Kings get: Luol Deng and PJ Brown

Lakers get: Ron Artest and Ben Wallace

However, Bryant is the ONLY player in the NBA with a no trade clause, and he will likely use it for this trade. Why? Kobe will only go to Chicago, if and only if Loul Deng is a part of the team. Kobe feels that Loul and himself would be the modern day Jordan/Pippen combo in Chicago.

Kobe is the celebrity with the NBA, but time has shown that he can’t handle the solo spotlight. He is the reverse of a boyband star going solo. Kobe was clearly a better player during the LA Lakers recent dynasty. And why? Because Big Shaq was his supporting star.

The only way Kobe will be traded is if he has a supporting star. And for all of the NBA’s sake let’s hope it’s an Oscar worthy performance

p1lebron.jpgRight now the face of Cleveland sports is Cavaliers superstar LeBron James. However, when the Cleveland Indians faced the New York Yankees last night King James was wearing the interlocking N Y on his navy blue cap. Yup that’s right, he was wearing a Yankee hat! LeBron said that he wore the hat because he’s a huge Yankee/Derek Jeter fan and always will be. Unforunately for LeBron the Yanks got hammered and he was heckled all the way home. (more…)
