Dare to Read with Suzanne Bloom

Filed under: Events — Amanda Hollister @ 11:44 am

Mark your calendars for April 15, 2008 at 1:15 PM and 2:50 PM.  Suzanne Bloom, noted author and illustrator, will be presenting in the Children’s Reading Area in the Teaching Materials Center, Memorial Library in conjunction with The Big Read.  Her theme will center on “Dare to Read:  The act of reading to a child creates a powerful connection between the reader and the child and between the child and a larger world.”  Ms. Bloom was an illustrator before she became a writer.  She notes, “..as much as I love writing the story, drawing the pictures is like dessert.”  She went to Cooper Union College, an art school, where she painted, made sculptures, and drew throughout her four years there.  She uses everyday details in her illustrations and lets the reader get to know who lives in each of her books.  Some of her books include A Family for Jamie: An Adoption Story, Girls A to Z, No Place for a Pig, The Bus for Us, A Splendid Friend Indeed, and Treasure.

Stop in at the Children’s Reading Area for a lively, energizing visit with Suzanne.  You will be glad you did!

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library in conjunction with The Big Read.

Stapler Research Project

Filed under: New Services — Amanda Hollister @ 11:44 am

Memorial Library will be conducting an intensive quantitative study of reactions of fear, horror, and terror in response to the new stapler at the reference desk.   Funded by a grant from the Department of Defense, assessment will occur over a period of six months at the library reference desk.  Data will be collected via a comprehensive survey of library users and by analysis of closed-circuit television using the Dartfish software package.  The findings will be crucial for the experimental weapons program for the Army’s Psychological Warfare unit, which will establish whether staplers equipped with extension cords should be parachuted into hot zones to demoralize the enemy.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Mr. April Fool

Boosting Faculty Research

Filed under: Tips — Amanda Hollister @ 11:52 am

Memorial Library has many great databases – but did you know you can get more for free?

The New York State Library and the New York Public Library can help you with your research. A card can get you access to thousands of articles from your home or office, saving you time and gas.

New York State Library

Databases available: Project Muse, AnthroSource, Sanborn Maps, New York Times-Historical, Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective, and more. Check here for a list of databases, and here for a list of journals.

Get a card: Write nyslcirc@mail.nysed.gov and ask for a state employee borrower’s card. An application will be mailed to you. Send it back with a photocopied pay stub and a copy of your Cortland ID.

New York Public Library

Databases available: Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry, African American History Online, Chinese E-Journal Collection, Project Muse, more here

Get a card: Any NY resident or student is eligible. Start on their website here. Under the picture of the “Branch Libraries – Circulating Collections” card, click on “Apply for a library card”.

Don’t forget to ask a librarian at Memorial Library if you need any help with your research!
