For Faculty who have students working on media production projects in their class and their drive space is not large enough to store these projects, Faculty will be able to request an increase in their student’s storage space.

The request should be made to the Technology Help Center (THC), helpdesk@cortland.edu , and contain the CRN-term code of the class (i.e. HLH 250 Fall ’08). Information Resources staff will process the request, which may take several days. Once the storage space has been increased the Faculty member will be notified when it’s completed. What is a NetID

Filed under: Administrative Computing, BannerWeb, New Services, myRedDragon — Josh Peluso @ August 21st, 2008

A NetID is your online identity at SUNY Cortland.  Your NetID will gain you access to most online resources at SUNY cortland.  You will need your NetID to logon to lab machines, webmail, webct and bannerweb.  Webmail, webct and bannerweb are now all accesible through one login – the myRedDragon portal  ( http://myreddragon.cortland.edu

FOR ALL STUDENTS:

Starting Auguest 20, 2008, your NetID will gain you access to bannerweb, webct and email, you will now have a single username and password to access all campus resources.

Students no longer use their C # and their username when signing on to both Webmail and their NetID. It is now their firstname.lastname  If any students are trying to log on, and they receive an error message that their password is no longer valid, they should try, for example:

Username: sherry.ellis
Password: theirusualpassword (if this doesn’t work, try using your last name and the last four digits of your C# – example: ellis9999)

*Security of your NetID is your responsibility, never share it with anyone, if you think your NetID have been compromised or if you continue to have problems logging in, please contact the technology helpcenter.

Wikis

Filed under: Library, New Services, Tech Tips — Dan Harms @ August 20th, 2008

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a website that allows you and others to work together to create pages and edit information so that others may read it.
What can I do with a wiki?

Wikis are best used for ongoing projects in which students and faculty are encouraged to contribute to and edit documents.
How can I get a wiki?

At this time, we recommend a free account on the provider Wikispaces (http://www.wikispaces.com). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Dan Harms, Coordinator of Instruction Librarian, at X4042 or harmsd@cortland.edu.

**WARNING!** Be ware of Email Password Phishing Scam

Filed under: Administrative Computing, IR News and Updates, Tech Tips — Josh Peluso @ August 16th, 2008

Dear Campus Community,

You may have received an email recently with the subject line “Webmail Internet Support”.  The email sender requested a reply with your email password and other personal information.  DO NOT RESPOND TO THE EMAIL.

It is not the policy of Information Resources to ever ask for your password, especially through email.  The email sent out today was in fact, an email phishing scam.  If you did respond to the email, you must change your password immediately at https://colfax.cortland.edu/password.

Burning a DVD using a Mac

Filed under: Tech Tips — TechInfo @ August 15th, 2008

Click here to download a copy of the instructions listed below with step by step screen shots (pdf file)

1. Insert a burnable DVD into the DVD drive on the Mac. (If you’re working on a Mac in the Mac Lab in Memorial Library, the DVD drive is on the side of the “monitor”. If you’re working in the multimedia rooms in Memorial Library, the DVD drive is in the computer tower on your desk, next to your monitor). You can purchase DVD-R (“R” means recordable) at any office supply store. I recommend the DVD-R instead of +R or RW

2. Once you insert the DVD, a pop up window will appear. From the Action drop down menu, choose “Open Finder” and then click the OK button

3. On your desktop, you will see an icon for an “Untitled DVD” Double click on it.

4. A Finder window will open. At the top of the Finder window are four ‘views’ by which you can see the items are on the DVD (Right now, it should be blank). Click on the first view which is “Show Items as Icons”

5. Click and drag the items that you want to burn to the DVD into this blank Finder window

6. When you have finished dragging and dropping the items that you want to burn to the DVD. Click on the burn button at the top of the Finder window or the burn icon next to “Untitled DVD” in the column on the left side of the Finder window.

7. Another pop up window will appear. Enter a name for your DVD (This should include your name, your class and/or your instructor. In case you lose the DVD, someone can return it to you.)

8. Once you have entered a name for your DVD, click the Burn button. The pop up widow will close and a progress window will open.

9. After the computer finishes burning the DVD, (a virus scan will run during some point in the burn process – just ignore it) click on the Eject button. There is also an Eject button on your keyboard. It looks like an upward pointing triangle with a dash under it and is located above the delete key, to the right of the F12 key.
