Expanding the Axes of an X-Y Scatter Plot in Excel 2007

Filed under: Tech Tips, Technology Training Center — TechInfo @ September 10th, 2008

When you create an X-Y scatter plot in Excel 2007, the default setting will create a chart with axes that end with the largest data points. If you need to extrapolate further data points, you will need to expand the axes of your existing chart.

Outlook Out of Office Assistant and Off Campus Email

Filed under: Administrative Computing, IR News and Updates, New Services — Josh Peluso @ September 10th, 2008

Thank you for your many inquiries and suggestions related to the use of the Outlook Out Of Office Assistant reaching colleagues off campus. In the past Out Of Office messages did not get sent to off campus addresses, they were solely used for communication to Cortland email users. We have received many suggestions requesting that the Out Of Office messages, be sent to off campus email addresses as well. Starting Friday September 12, 2008 you’re Out Of Office messages will reach others outside of the Cortland email system. Please be aware when setting your Out Of Office message, that others outside the Cortland email system will begin receiving your notification.

AOL email delivery update

Filed under: Administrative Computing, IR News and Updates — Josh Peluso @ September 10th, 2008

We believe that AOL has started to accept our emails. There are still quite a few old emails queued up to be sent to AOL, and those should clear out over night.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

In an effort to mitigate future spam and virus outbreaks, we have installed a device that evaluates our outbound emails.

In the unlikely event that the device catches an email that isn’t spam, it has been configured to send a response back to you if it blocks or quarantines an email message.
The message it sends back to the sender should include the subject line of the email that was sent out.

This should be a good way to determine if the message is genuinely from the device and not a phishing or virus email.

If you receive a message that you feel matches this description, please inform the technology helpdesk at x2500 (607-753-2500) and ask the technician to log a ticket with your details.

Outbound Email Issues

Filed under: Administrative Computing, IR News and Updates — Josh Peluso @ September 10th, 2008

Over the weekend the campus experienced a massive spam outbreak. The majority of the messages have destinations of Yahoo and AOL. Due to this SPAM outbreak, both Yahoo and AOL have listed Cortland.edu as a spam sending entity (blacklisted). We have been working diligently to get these blocks removed, and have had success in getting the blacklisting removed from Yahoo and some other small sites. As of today at 1:00pm, we have yet to be successful in removing the blacklisting status for Cortland.edu with the AOL servers.

You should expect that any message you have sent to AOL between Saturday the 6th and today have yet to be delivered. Our mail system will hold the messages for 48 hours after their original sent time. In the next day or so, if the situation has not been resolved, you may start receiving Undeliverable messages back from our mail system.

Our suggestion for those who must send email to AOL accounts in the interim is to use a non-Cortland email account (yahoo, g-mail, hotmail, etc) to send that message.

As always, it is NEVER the policy of SUNY Cortland Information Resources to ever ask for your account credentials (username and password) over email. Please never respond to emails and provide your account information or any other personally identifiable information to anyone by email. These are typically email phishing scams designed to breach network security as well as steal your identity

We do apologize for the inconvenience.

Mac Users and JSTOR – PDF Incompatibility with Mac Preview

Filed under: Library, Tech Tips — Jennifer Hoover @ September 3rd, 2008

From JSTOR:

We have recently become aware that certain versions of Mac Preview are incompatible with the newest generation of JSTOR PDFs. For some users, this means that only the cover page is displaying. Other users have reported that the downloaded article appears to be missing the first portion of the article—it begins somewhere after the first 10 pages of the article. The article is in fact intact and complete, but some pages are not displayed properly. We are working to fix this and plan to continue to support the use of Preview with JSTOR PDFs. We apologize for the problems that this is causing for Mac users.

For now, the quickest workaround is to download the latest free copy of Adobe Reader, available on the Adobe web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html

Once Adobe Reader is downloaded, please check to make sure that the default PDF viewer is set to Adobe Reader rather than the original PDF viewer installed on your Mac.

The default viewer for PDF documents in Mac OS X is Preview. To change the file association for PDF files:
• Select any PDF file and choose File > Get Info.
• Choose the application that you want to open PDF files from the Open With menu.
• Click Change All, and then click Continue.

You will also want to make sure that the popup blocker is turned off for the JSTOR site. The new PDF files are set to open in a new window and popup blockers may affect this.
