Overview

SUNY Cortland offers a variety of online and interactive video courses to reach students who prefer this mode of instruction and those who are not physically on campus.

 

 

Online (Asynchronous) Course Delivery

As of January 2009 over 5,500 students have enrolled in more than 500 courses that SUNY Cortland faculty have taught online. Students “virtually” attend courses and interact with faculty and fellow students electronically. Syllabi, lectures, resource materials, discussion, assignments and exams are all available in electronic format. Faculty teach online and hybrid courses using SUNY Cortland’s eLearning system (Blackboard). Most students find the online learning experience enriching and have been successful online students. They have developed good rapport with their instructors and fellow students. An increasing number of students enroll in online courses during summer and winter sessions so they can take courses while away from Cortland.

 

 

Interactive Video Classroom

There are interactive video classroom facilities available in the Sperry Learning Center. These classrooms are used to deliver courses to remote locations and to collaborate with others.

Groups in myRedDragon allow you to collaborate and display information within the myRedDragon portal.  If you are a member of a group, or a group leader you will need to add the group studio channels to your layout (your portal screen in order to view group activity, such as posts, discussion, chats and message boards.

Step One:

Login to the myRedDragon Portal:

Step Two:

You will need to navigate to the “Content Layout” screen in the Portal:

Click the “Content Layout” Link .

Step Three:

You are going to be adding the group channels to your welcome screen, below the campus announcement channel, click “New Channel”

Step Four:

You will need to select the group channels to add to your layout.  IF you are a group leader you will want to add the “Group Leader Activity Channel” first, than repeat the steps to add the “Group Studio Activity Channel”

From the drop down menu select “Group Tools”, click the “go” button .

IF you are a Group Leader, add the Group Leader Channel, than click Add Channel (On the right hand side)

Add the Group Studio Activity Channel, click Add Channel.

(If you are adding both the group leader and the activity channel, repeat step four as needed until both are added to you welcome screen)

Step Five:

Click the “Back to Cortland Online Tab”, upper left hand corner .

You should now see the channels you added.  As group activity occurs, the channels will display the information.

We have been notified, thanks to an observant professor, that Impactica and the newest version of JAVA are not compatible.

“We are aware that many of our clients are encountering an issue with the latest Java release, 1.6.0_11, and version 4.0.2 Impatica for PowerPoint content where the content does not playback properly.”

Until a solution can be reached it is advised that you downgrade your Java.

How do I uninstall Java on my Windows machine?

To uninstall Java from your system, use the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Microsoft Windows Control Panel.

1. Click Start
2. Select Settings
3. Select Control Panel
4. Double click the Add/Remove Programs control panel icon
5. The Add/Remove control panel displays a list of software on your system, including any Java software products that are on your computer. Select the Java Runtime Environment that you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Remove button.

Once you are on the above page, select your operating system platform, e.g. Windows, and then check the “I agree…” checkbox. Click the “Continue>>” button.

On the following page, which will be entitled: “Download Java SE Runtime Environment 6u7 First Customer Ship for Windows, Multi-language“>”, download and install the earlier version of Java!

SUNY Cortland students have the opportunity to take online (asynchronous) courses in a variety of subject areas. This can be an especially convenient option during summer and winter sessions, when it is possible to enroll in courses and earn credits without physically being on the Cortland. Since the inception of online education over ten years ago, over 5,500 students have enrolled in more than 500 online courses. Online courses are designated ASYNCH in the Registrar’s Schedule of Classes and require departmental permission.

In addition to SUNY Cortland online courses, students may enroll in hundreds of courses offered each semester through the SUNY Learning Network. The SUNY Learning Network (SLN) is a partnership in learning with many SUNY campuses, including Cortland.

Open your U: drive. Usually this will be found under your My Computer icon labeled as U: (“username” on shares\home$). If it does not appear there you should be able to access it by clicking on the Start button, then on Run. In the box that appears type in the following:

\\shares\home$\username

For example, I would type in \\shares\home$\durrj

Regardless of how you accessed the U: drive a window should open displaying files that are currently stored there. Now you can simply drag the files you want to move to the U: drive into that window.  You may be dragging files from your Desktop or your My Documents folder.

Student Intern Accounts (non-SUNY Cortland students)

Unpaid Student Interns:

A student intern who is not a current SUNY Cortland student and who is not being placed on SUNY Cortland payroll is considered an unpaid student Intern.

 

All departments on campus that employ “unpaid Interns” are required to have them report to Human Resources prior to starting their internship here on campus. Human Resources will place all “unpaid Interns” on a volunteer roster identifying them as having a legitimate purpose on campus. They will then be eligible for a C#, ID card and parking permit. The employing department will have the “unpaid Intern” sign a confidentiality form and also instruct them on SUNY Cortland’s FERPA document

 

Obtaining a C#, ID card, and parking permit:

Student interns report to the Human Resources Office to obtain a “Verification of Eligibility for SUNY ID Card” form.   This signed verification is then taken to University Police where a C# will be issued.  Once the C# is issued, a parking permit can be obtained (student interns are treated like graduate assistants for parking purposes and will receive “G” permits).   The C# also permits the student intern to obtain a SUNY ID card through Auxiliary Services Corporation.

 

Who can create an Intern Account?

Intern accounts can be created by calling the Technology Help Center. A valid Cortland C# is required. Prior arrangements should be made. Last minute requests will not be guaranteed.

The sponsoring department of the Intern must provide specific information before a temporary Intern Account is created. The account can only be created by contacting the Technology Help Center. No account will be created without the required information from appropriate sponsor.
