Using 360 Link in Library Databases

Filed under: Library — Jennifer Hoover @ August 29th, 2007

What is 360 Link?

360 Link is an OpenURL link resolver that helps users find and link to full text articles within the library’s collection.

How do I use 360 Link?

After doing a search in one of the databases, the 360 Link button or Check 360 Link for Full Text will appear in the search results page. Clicking on the button or the text produces a results page with direct links to one or more of the following:• the full text of the article in a library subscribed database.• the journal or database in which the article may be found.• Search the SUNY Cortland Catalog for a print copy of the journal.• Submit an interlibrary loan request.

Why is the “article” link not always available?

If the article link is absent from the results page it could be due to one of the following reasons:• SUNY Cortland does not subscribe to the full text or have 100% access for that particular title• The publisher of the title may not provide full text online• The provider of the journal does not support OpenURL

How do I get to the article if there is only a journal or database link?

If 360 Link takes you to the journal’s table of contents or a database home page, you will have to browse the table of contents to locate the issue and article you need, or search the database to retrieve the full text article.

Why does 360 Link provide an article level link even though the full text of the article is not available?

This can occur for the following reasons:

• Citation/abstract appears in a database before the publisher has made the full text available.
• Publishers or authors withhold full text articles from the online versions of the database.
