eLearning for Faculty – Backing up content!!

Filed under: Tech Tips, distance learning, eLearning — Hailey Ruoff @ July 21st, 2009

As a faculty member there are two distinct ways to back-up the content in your eLearning course.  An internal back-up, which will save all the content that you created in case of a system failure AND a local back-up of all the student content.

The internal back-up should be done once at the beginning of the semester and then once when ALL of your content is in place. The system administrator takes these files and saves them for use (if needed) in the future. You are also able to save a copy on your U drive “just in case” but will NOT be able to use this file without assistance from the system administrator. You can find a tutorial on how to create a system back-up here: System Back-up of eLearning

In order to save your class information in a format that is readable to you (ie: you do not need a system administrator to restore it for you) several steps need to be taken. Tutorials for backing up Discussion Threads, Mail, Assessments and Assignments can be found here:

Distance Learning Update 2008-2009

Filed under: IR News and Updates, eLearning — Information Resources @ January 28th, 2009

Overview

SUNY Cortland offers a variety of online and interactive video courses to reach students who prefer this mode of instruction and those who are not physically on campus.

Online (Asynchronous) Course Delivery

As of January 2009 over 5,500 students have enrolled in more than 500 courses that SUNY Cortland faculty have taught online. Students “virtually” attend courses and interact with faculty and fellow students electronically. Syllabi, lectures, resource materials, discussion, assignments and exams are all available in electronic format. Faculty teach online and hybrid courses using SUNY Cortland’s eLearning system (Blackboard). Most students find the online learning experience enriching and have been successful online students. They have developed good rapport with their instructors and fellow students. An increasing number of students enroll in online courses during summer and winter sessions so they can take courses while away from Cortland.

Interactive Video Classroom

There are interactive video classroom facilities available in the Sperry Learning Center. These classrooms are used to deliver courses to remote locations and to collaborate with others.

For More Information

Faculty interested in teaching online or interactive video courses should speak with their department chair who must approve the course and its mode of delivery. For more information about teaching either an online or interactive video course, contact Paula Warnken, Associate Provost for Information Resources (paula.warnken@cortland.edu, x5942).

Online Learning Opportunities at SUNY Cortland – SUNY Learning Network

Filed under: distance learning — Information Resources @ January 26th, 2009

SUNY Cortland students have the opportunity to take online (asynchronous) courses in a variety of subject areas. This can be an especially convenient option during summer and winter sessions, when it is possible to enroll in courses and earn credits without physically being on the Cortland. Since the inception of online education over ten years ago, over 5,500 students have enrolled in more than 500 online courses. Online courses are designated ASYNCH in the Registrar’s Schedule of Classes and require departmental permission.

In addition to SUNY Cortland online courses, students may enroll in hundreds of courses offered each semester through the SUNY Learning Network. The SUNY Learning Network (SLN) is a partnership in learning with many SUNY campuses, including Cortland.

For more information about online education at SUNY Cortland, visit the Information Resources Distance Learning webpage.

International Distance Learning Grant

Filed under: Forms, Grants, eLearning — Information Resources @ July 31st, 2008

International Distance Learning Grant Application

The purpose of these grants is to encourage faculty to incorporate an international distance-learning component into their class or to develop an entire international on-line distance-learning class in collaboration with a colleague abroad. Stipends of $500 will be awarded for development of an international distance-learning component in a class and stipends of $1,000 will be awarded for development of an entire international on-line distance learning class. All teaching faculty, both full-time and adjunct, are eligible. The submission deadline is “rolling” with work expected to be carried out in the summer or winter session and/or semester or year prior to when the class component or entire class will be taught. (The lead-times needed to complete preparations will vary greatly and the grant guidelines are intended to be flexible in this regard.) The recipient may work with the college’s Instructional Media Design Specialists who will help coordinate course distance-learning platform and technical issues. Application guidelines are available from the Office of Information Resources.

Long Range Planning Grant to Infuse Information and Technology Competencies

Eight grants of $750 are available for faculty to develop higher level information and technology competencies which are infused into courses. Grant recipients will develop models that provide good and appropriate examples of teaching students to locate, utilize, and communicate information. These models should foster critical thinking skills, improve students’ research skills and improve their understanding of the appropriate use of technology to communicate what the students have learned.

Outcomes could range from developing a team teaching (librarian and faculty) approach to the literature of the field; teaching students to think critically about their use of information and technology; developing a “library lab hour” component to a course; or other classroom related project that explores how students understand and process information. Grant proposals must show how information literacy will be infused into the course(s) to improve students’ ability to locate, utilize and communicate information learning.
